Single Heart In Lincoln Cathedral Limestone
Single heart, carved by hand in Lincoln Cathedral limestone and finished with red enamel paint.
The stone originates from the Cathedral's own quarry on Riseholme Road in Lincoln, and is the same stone used for the original construction of the minster, as well as it's ongoing restoration.
Opened in the mid 1800’s the current quarry has now sadly ceased extraction due to the constraints of it's location.
The stone is now a rarity, and each piece is unique in shape and size. It's geological classification is a Middle Jurassic limestone from the Inferior Oolite Series, formed approximately 165 million years ago.
The markings that can be seen on each piece of stone are ooids and fragments of marine fossils.
